FAQ

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture treatments work on multiple levels by activating blood flow, stimulating nervous and strengthening immune systems, improving organ functions, as well as calming the mind and relaxing the body all at the same time.

Acupuncture stimulates the body’s own production of pain relieving chemicals called “endorphins” that help to block pain relaying pathways from the body to the brain. This results in pain relief, relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems. In other words, acupuncture is a great tool that stimulates the body’s own healing abilities.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?

During acupuncture treatments hair-thin needles are inserted into particular body points located along certain meridian-pathways. Acupuncture treatments help to unblock and activate the meridians, improve circulation and bring a flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen to the area, as well as activate nervous and endocrine systems (commonly known in TCM as vital energy or “Qi”).

Does acupuncture hurt?

People experience differing sensations with acupuncture. Most patients feel only minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at all.

What kinds of needles are used during each treatment?

In all acupuncture treatments only sterile, disposable needles are used according to the Clean Needle Technique protocol, developed by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) to ensure the safest acupuncture treatment possible.

Are there any adverse effects or risks to the treatment?

One of the most striking aspects of acupuncture is the almost complete absence of adverse effects and complications from its use. Most patients find that the treatments are relaxing and cause minimal discomfort.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

The number of treatments may vary with each individual and the condition being treated. While in some cases there may be a need for only a few treatments, the others, such as chronic conditions, may require more treatments.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

No. Acupuncture is used successfully on cats, dogs, horses and other animals. A positive attitude towards wellness may reinforce the effects of any type of treatment.

Is acupuncture covered by my insurance plan?

Many insurance companies cover acupuncture treatments. Please contact your insurance provider directly to verify your coverage.

What is traditional Chinese medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on preventative care. Its sustainable approach is based on observation of the states of body, mind, and the surrounding environment. Manifestations of imbalance are presented by signs and symptoms, such as pain, tense shoulders, headaches, low energy, digestive problems or emotional distress. The main goal of TCM is to enhance health and longevity by balancing nervous and endocrine systems, known in TCM as “Qi”.

The main therapeutic treatments of TCM are: acupuncture, traditional Chinese massage (tui-na), herbal formulas, diet and exercise.
